Collection and Custody of Archives

Reception of archives:

Collecting historical archives is one of the main tasks of the National Archives Center. Throughout the year, the latter receives a significant amount of documents of historical nature from various public and private organizations, which requires adopting a solid policy that guarantees the management of archives in order to communicate them in the best conditions.

Methods of collecting archives:

The National Archives Center uses many methods to collect archives, namely:

  •  Transfer: it is mandatory for public bodies under article 08 and 09 of law 88-09 and optional for private ones.
  •  Bequest.
  •  Procurement.
  • Deposit.
  • Exchange. 

Procedures of transfer:

  • The transferring body submits to the National Archives Center a request for transfer of their archives classified as historical archives, the request is accompanied with the necessary information concerning the transfer (the subject of the fonds to be transferred, inclusive dates, the number of archives units, the nature of the documents and the linear meter).
  • The Center responds to the request on the basis of the information provided by the transferring body and by referring to its archives management schedule.
  • The National Archives Center, represented by the Department of Custody and Transfer, examines the fonds to be transferred and provides necessary instructions for the completion of the transfer procedures.
  • The transferring body prepares 03 copies of the transfer list for the fonds to be transferred.
  •  The National Archives Center receives the transferred archives and checks whether it corresponds to the content of the transfer list so that the three copies of the list are signed and authenticated by the transferring body and the receiving body and assigned to an accession number.  
  • The National Archives Center records the transferred archives in the archives register.

Archives custody:
The National Archives Center ensures providing the appropriate conditions for the storage of archives, in accordance with international laws and standards in order to guarantee their safety and their communication in the best circumstances.

The National Archives Center Receives the Archives of Mujahid Reimer Holzinger

The National Archives Center receives the archives of the late Austrian Algerian fighter Reimer Holzinger during the tribute ceremony organized in his honor on May 10, 2014, in the presence of political and diplomatic figures and researchers specialized in the modern history of Algeria. 

The National Archives Center Receives Archives from his Excellency the Ambassador of the United States to Algeria. October 13, 2018

As part of the official visit of His Excellency the Ambassador of the United States to Algeria to the National Archives Center, on October 13, 2018, paper and electronic copies of documents from the American Archives were offered, including the report of Senator John F. Kennedy dated July 2, 1957, on the position of American foreign policy on imperialism and on the independence of certain countries like Algeria. 

He also provided a copy of the video of the speech of the late American President John F. Kennedy at the white house, dated July 3, 1962 and copies of archival documents dealing with the Algerian Question during the war of liberation and the consolidation of relations between the Algerian and American people after independence.

Reception of the Archives of the Late Friend of Revolution Charles Henry Favrod

During its visit to Geneva in Switzerland on October 22 till 26, 2018, the official delegation of the National Archives of Algeria, under the chairmanship of Mr. Director General of the National Archives, received an archives fonds given by journalist Charles Henry Favrod related to the history of Algeria during the colonial era.

The fonds has books and circulars in Arabic and French, newspapers, and various photos related to the Algerian war of liberation, in addition to a set of audio-visual media. We also find archival documents of the Algerian Cultural Heritage Institution in Switzerland, of which he was a member.

Reception of a Photographic Fonds by Mr. Stevan Labudovic

The National Archives Center received from Mr. Stevan Labudovic, the photographer of the war of liberation, a photographic fonds that includes 274 original photos of different sizes documenting and demonstrating the daily life of the National Liberation Army during the war of liberation between 1959 and 1962 on the eastern Algerian borders. In addition to a collection of newspapers articles telling the events of the Algerian revolution in Yugoslavian newspapers.
