Education in Algeria
Education has always been the cornerstone in the construction and progress of civilizations. It is a powerful tool for the development of individuals and their abilities and which allows them to become active in society. In this regard, the National Archives Center organized, on April 16, 2023, an exhibition on the education sector in Algeria, entitled “Teaching in Algeria… Historical Stages”.
The Director of the National Archives Center, Mr. Mohamed Tiliouine, delivered a speech on this occasion where he tackled the particular attention that the Algerian State pays to individuals, in terms of education and its policy of elimination of illiteracy through free and compulsory education for Algerians which was done immediately after the national sovereignty was restituted, a period of maturity whose effects on the individual and society are manifested through:
- Building schools and universities from which qualified professors and researchers have graduated;
- Emergence of Ulama and teachers;
- Expansion of education in villages and towns, despite the after-effects of colonialism and its attempts to erase the personality and identity of the Algerian people.
At the end of the speech, the Director of the National Archives Center invited the public to visit the exhibition prepared in this context, and which included archival documents revealing the suffering of the Algerian people and the challenges they faced during colonization as well as the development and progress the country has made in the education sector.
